George P. Brown, PhD
Founder, President & CEO, Prestige Family Office University
George P. Brown, PhD, is the Founder, President and CEO of Prestige Family Office University (PFU), an educational institution devoted to helping families with businesses, their rising generations, executives, mentors, and professional advisors understand and apply the principles of effective family office leadership, stewardship, succession, wealth management, governance, and multigenerational continuity.
PFU represents the culmination of a professional career spanning more than six decades across banking, securities, investment management, estate planning, business ownership, corporate management, philanthropy, consulting, and education.
Dr. Brown’s career has been distinguished not simply by participation in these industries, but by repeatedly building, leading, transforming, and introducing new approaches within them. His experience gives PFU a practical foundation rooted in the real-world challenges faced by entrepreneurs, family businesses, affluent families, executives, and professional advisors.
A Career Built Around Leadership, Innovation and Transformation
George began his professional career after graduating from the United States Merchant Marine Academy with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering. At the Academy, he served on the Regimental Staff as Communications Officer and was third in command, while also serving as captain of the Academy’s soccer team. He subsequently served as an officer in the United States Naval Reserve.
His early career included engineering work with Sperry Gyroscope Company, where he worked with military ground and surface radar systems. He later entered the securities industry, first as a branch manager and executive and subsequently as the founder and president of his own securities firm.
That entrepreneurial experience established a pattern that would characterize much of his career: identifying opportunities, developing new markets, building organizations and improving the way businesses serve their customers.
George later entered the healthcare industry with Pharmaseal/American Hospital Supply, where he participated in introducing the then-new disposable needle and syringe to hospitals in the New York metropolitan area. During this period, disposable medical products fundamentally changed hospital operations and economics, and George personally worked with approximately 100 hospitals as this transformation occurred.
He subsequently joined NARCO Scientific Industries, an aviation and electronics company, where his responsibilities included marketing and mergers and acquisitions. Among his accomplishments was helping to reduce production time for aircraft avionics systems from approximately 24 months to 12 months.
Transforming Retail Banking in Philadelphia
One of the most consequential chapters of George’s professional career began when he joined the Philadelphia Saving Fund Society (PSFS), then one of Philadelphia’s leading financial institutions.
As Vice President of Retail Banking, he participated in a period of substantial growth and innovation within the organization.
Under his retail banking leadership, the bank expanded dramatically, increasing its branch system from approximately 37 offices to more than 100 locations while significantly increasing its asset base.
George helped introduce a number of concepts that were innovative in Philadelphia banking at the time, including:
- A formal sales and business development function within retail banking;
- A dedicated Private Banking Department serving affluent clients;
- A broker/dealer securities capability;
- An insurance marketing operation;
- A significantly accelerated branch expansion program; and
- The introduction of automatic teller machines into the Philadelphia banking market.
These experiences gave him an unusually broad understanding of how financial institutions serve individuals, families, businesses and their professional advisors—and how specialized services can be coordinated around the increasingly complex needs of successful clients.
More Than Four Decades in Trusts, Estates and Advanced Planning
Following his banking career, George increasingly concentrated his work on the financial, estate and business planning needs of affluent individuals, entrepreneurs and families.
His professional credentials include the Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU) and Chartered Financial Consultant (ChFC) designations from The American College, as well as extensive securities licensing during his years in the financial services profession.
He has served as Chairman of George P. Brown Investment Advisors, Inc., President of American Preferred Securities, Inc., and as a registered securities principal.
Over the course of his career, George has developed extensive experience in:
- Advanced estate planning;
- Revocable living trusts;
- Dynasty and multigenerational trusts;
- Asset protection planning;
- Charitable trusts and foundations;
- Family Limited Partnerships;
- Business succession;
- Business valuation;
- Planned giving;
- Investment and wealth management;
- Family governance;
- Strategic planning for closely held businesses; and
- Virtual Family Office services.
Over several decades, he has introduced estate and multigenerational planning concepts to thousands of families and has worked extensively with entrepreneurs, business owners and their advisors.
His work increasingly led to an important conclusion: families do not merely need more financial products or isolated professional advice. They need education, coordination, leadership and a framework through which multiple generations and multiple professional disciplines can work together.
That realization became one of the foundations for Prestige Family Office University.
Building the Virtual Family Office Model
Through Prestige Strategies LLC, George has worked with high-net-worth families, entrepreneurs and professional advisors using a Virtual Family Office model.
Rather than expecting any one advisor to possess all of the expertise required by a sophisticated family, the model brings together specialists in complementary disciplines such as:
- Tax planning and mitigation;
- Legal and estate planning;
- Investment management;
- Risk management;
- Business consulting;
- Succession planning;
- Family governance; and
- Advanced wealth and charitable planning
George has assembled and worked with a national network of highly specialized subject-matter experts who can collaborate with a family’s existing accountants, attorneys, financial advisors, insurance professionals, consultants and other trusted professionals.
That interdisciplinary experience became another cornerstone of the PFU educational philosophy.
Prestige Family Office University teaches that an effective family office is not simply an investment operation or administrative entity. It is a coordinating leadership system for the family, its enterprises, its wealth, its advisors and its future generations.
Educator and Leadership Researcher
Education has been a recurring theme throughout George’s career.
He has served as a guest instructor in bank marketing programs associated with institutions including The Wharton School, the University of Massachusetts–Amherst and the University of Wisconsin–Madison, and has lectured in continuing education programs on estate planning and tax-related subjects.
He earned his PhD in Management & Leadership from Logos University after previously completing postgraduate studies in business and finance at Hofstra University.
George also created and developed Leadership Research Analysis, a system designed to help executives and organizations better understand leadership capability, judgment, behavioral characteristics and organizational performance.
His decades of experience as both practitioner and educator have shaped PFU’s educational philosophy: sophisticated subjects should be made understandable, practical and directly applicable to the decisions families and advisors must make.
Entrepreneurial Experience—Including Lessons That Cannot Be Learned From a Textbook
George’s career has included the creation, ownership, leadership or management of businesses in securities, financial services, consulting, investment management, estate planning and other industries.
His entrepreneurial experience has also included businesses outside traditional financial services, including a family enterprise operating a fleet of rental cruising houseboats.
Not every venture succeeded exactly as planned.
That experience is important to the educational philosophy of PFU.
George believes that leadership is developed not only through successes, but through adversity, changing economic conditions, failed assumptions and lessons learned from placing trust in the wrong people.
Those experiences reinforced a principle that now influences his approach to family office leadership:
Surround yourself with highly capable people—and then be willing to listen to their counsel.
For families attempting to preserve an enterprise and its values across generations, that principle may be as important as any technical planning strategy.
Service, Philanthropy and Stewardship
George’s professional interests have long extended beyond business and personal financial success.
He has served as Treasurer, Board Member and Chair of the Finance Committee of the Pearl S. Buck Foundation and has participated in other charitable and nonprofit organizations.
He is also Founder and CEO of Doers & Stewards, Inc., a charitable ministry supporting numerous ministries, and Founder and CEO of The Exponential Family Enterprise Foundation, Inc.
These activities reflect an important distinction in George’s philosophy of wealth:
Wealth is not merely something to be accumulated. It is something to be stewarded.
For successful families, stewardship involves responsibility—to family members, employees, customers, communities, charitable causes, future generations and, for families of faith, to God.
That philosophy is central to the mission of Prestige Family Office University.
Why Prestige Family Office University Was Created
After decades of working with business owners, affluent families, financial institutions and professional advisors, George became increasingly concerned about a recurring problem.
Families may spend a lifetime creating successful businesses and accumulating significant wealth, yet devote comparatively little time to preparing the people who will eventually inherit responsibility for those businesses, assets and family relationships.
At the same time, families are frequently served by talented professionals who work independently within their respective disciplines but may lack a common framework for coordinating the family’s overall strategy.
George founded Prestige Family Office University to address that gap.
PFU is designed to educate:
- Family business owners;
- Spouses and family members;
- Rising-generation leaders;
- Family office executives;
- Accountants and CPAs;
- Attorneys;
- Financial advisors;
- Insurance professionals;
- Business consultants;
- Mentors;
- Ambassadors; and
- Other professionals serving successful families.
The objective is not to replace a family’s existing professional advisors.
It is to help families and advisors work better together.
The Christian Family Office Stewardship Mindset
Prestige Family Office University approaches family office education from a distinctly Christian perspective.
George believes that successful families have an opportunity—and a responsibility—to look beyond wealth accumulation and consider questions of purpose, stewardship, service, leadership and legacy.
PFU therefore encourages families to ask not simply:
“How much wealth can we preserve?”
but also:
“What is this family being called to accomplish with the resources, businesses, talents and opportunities entrusted to it?”
This approach transforms the family office from a financial structure into something broader—a platform through which a family can coordinate its business interests, professional advisors, family governance, education, philanthropy, stewardship and multigenerational mission.
Founder With the Perspective of Both Practitioner and Entrepreneur
One of the distinguishing characteristics George brings to Prestige Family Office University is that his understanding of family offices was not developed solely in an academic environment.
It was developed through decades of experience:
As an engineer.
As a Naval officer.
As a securities entrepreneur.
As a corporate marketing executive.
As an M&A executive.
As a banking executive.
As an investment advisor.
As an estate planner.
As a business consultant.
As a nonprofit leader.
As an educator.
As an entrepreneur who experienced both success and adversity.
And ultimately, as an advisor working with families attempting to coordinate all of these disciplines.
That breadth of experience enables PFU to approach family office education from the perspective of the entire family enterprise rather than from any single professional specialty.
A Lifelong Commitment to Learning
George has never viewed education as something that ends with a degree or professional designation.
His career has been characterized by continually entering new fields, studying new disciplines and applying lessons learned in one industry to another.
That same curiosity extends into his personal life.
A lifelong aviation enthusiast and licensed private pilot, George has owned multiple aircraft and personally built a two-seat Excalibur experimental aircraft. He has also been an active sailor and power boater on the Chesapeake Bay.
For him, aviation provides an apt metaphor for leadership:
A pilot must understand the destination, prepare carefully, monitor changing conditions, rely upon both instruments and judgment, assemble the right resources, and make timely course corrections without losing sight of the objective.
Families attempting to guide an enterprise and its wealth across generations face much the same challenge.
Preparing Families for Generations, Not Transactions
Today, George’s principal professional mission is helping families think beyond individual transactions and toward multigenerational stewardship.
Through Prestige Family Office University, he seeks to help families develop the knowledge, leadership capabilities, governance systems, advisor relationships and stewardship mindset necessary to manage increasingly complex family enterprises.
His vision is for PFU graduates to understand not simply what a family office does, but why it exists, whom it serves, how its advisors should work together, how future generations should be prepared, and how family resources can be directed toward a meaningful legacy.
After a career spanning banking, investment management, estate planning, business transformation, entrepreneurship, philanthropy and education, George P. Brown founded Prestige Family Office University to pass those lessons forward.
The ultimate objective is straightforward:
Help successful families become prepared families—capable of preserving not only their enterprises and wealth, but also their values, relationships, leadership and purpose for generations to come.
